| Добредојдовте на Охридската тврдина! Ohrid Castle (or Samuel's Fortress) is a large stone fort that overlooks the Ohrid Lake on the border of Albania in south-west Macedonia (F.Y.R.O.M.). Where the castle sits now has been the site of many other previous fortifications. The earliest known record of the Ohrid Fort dates back to the third century B.C., when it was the fortress of the town of Lychnidos. The Ohrid Fortress of Tzar Samuel was described as a mighty fortress that even Theodoric, King of the Ostrogoths (branch of the later Goths that established a kingdom in Italy in the late 5th and 6th centuries), was unable to seize. This castle is one of the largest preserved castles of all of Republic of Macedonia. Its massive ramparts and towers surround the entire summit of the strategic hill that juts out into the lake. Lychnidos was entered by three gates, of which only the upper gate has survived. During the rule of Samuel (976-1014) Ohrid was the capital of the first state of Macedonian Slavs. Eventually Ohrid became a medieval metropolis. Within the walls of the castle there were once numerous streets with several large stone buildings and homes. Eventually, after Samuel's Fortress was captured by the Ottomans the town started to grow outside of the walls. A Christian population stayed inside the fort until moving out decades later. The inside of the castle was practically abandoned and has been ever since. Today this site is an archaeologists dream with new sites constantly arriving. Ви благодариме за посетата! |
