| Üdvözöljük a Vajdahunyad vára! Vajdahunyad Castle is a large lakeside castle located in the City Park of Budapest. It was constructed in 1896 as part of the Millennial Exhibition which celebrated 1,000 years of Hungary since the Hungarian Conquest of the Carpathian Basin in 895. The castle is interesting in that the designer built it to feature copies of several different buildings from different parts of the Kingdom of Hungary, especially Hunyad Castle in Transylvania which is now present day Romania. (I recommend reading my post on Hunyad Castle). Having copies of portions of different landmarks it features a variety of styles from Romanesque and Gothic, to Renaissance and Baroque. Romanesque for the age of the Árpád dynasty, Gothic for the many other Hungarian royal houses and the Renaissance and Baroque styles for the period of the Habsburg family. The castle has never housed anything government related. Today Vajdahunyad Castle houses the Museum of Hungarian Agriculture, the biggest agricultural museum in Europe. The museum features a wide variety of agricultural related exhibits from wildlife management to the milking industry. The castle surprised me at first because I would not think that such a grand building would be built for an agriculture museum. The castle is popular toady for tourists interested in its recent history and its combination of architectural styles. Hunyad's influence of Vajdahunyad can be seen from the lake. The four towers that run along the wall are identical to those of Hunyad Castle. At first, this huge castle was built out of just carboard and wood. But it was so popular that the temporary structure was tore down and rebuilt with stone in 1904. Köszönjük, hogy meglátogatta! |
