| Velkommen til Egeskov Slot! Egeskov Castle is one of many beautiful castles in Denmark. The castle was built in 1554 by Frands Brokenhuus. During this time in history, this part of Europe was going through a lot of political unrest and the Reformation. Because of this, many landowners built their homes as well-protected castles and Egeskov was no exception. Brokenhuus built his castle on top of a lake, literally. The castle is supported by oak pilings. According to legend, it took an entire forest to do the job. The building itself is made up of two long houses connected by a double-wall. The wall is so thick that it can hold a hidden staircase and well for a water supply during a siege. The outer walls have machicolations for dropping solids or liquids on the enemy attackers. Their is a beautiful drawbridge that is the only way into the house as well as towers for shooting at the enemy's flank if they are trying to get in. Fortunately Egeskov was never attacked. Various families have lived in the castle since. By the nineteenth century, the castle had its own dairy farm, power station, and even a railway track to nearby Kværndrup! In 1967, the Veteran Car Museum was opened in the former dairy barn and it has grown very extensively. It is now a major attraction and if you don't like cars, you can explore the vast gardens that surround the castle. I encourage you to look more into this castle and its surrounding area.
