| Dobrodošli u dvorac Trakošćan! Trakošćan Castle is a beautiful fortification perched on top of a hill in northern Croatia. According to legend, Trakošćan was named after another fort that had stood in the same spot centuries beforethe 1200's. Trakošćan was built in the 13th century as a small observation post monitoring the road from Ptuj to Bednja Valley. At first it was a small wooden structure. As the years past, threats from neighboring super powers like the Turks and the rise of the Romanesque and neo-Gothic styles turned the castle into what it is today. The lake below and the steep hill is what makes Trakošćan so easily defendable. When the fort was built the trees that we see today on the hill would not have been there so spotting out people would have been easier. The castle was owned by army leader deputy warden Ivan Gyulay who kept the castle for three generations until the state took ownership. The state then gave the castle to Juraj Draskovic (1525-1487) for his services in the military. The family kept it until the 18th century, when the building of manor houses flourished and Trakošćan Castle was abandoned. The castle was neglected until the family came back in the 19th century and restored the castle. In 1944 the Draskovics were forced to migrate to Austria, leaving their beloved castle in the hands of the state. In 1953 the castle was turned into a museum and is owned by the Republic of Croatia today. Hvala vam na posjeti! |
