| Sveiki atvykę į Trakų pilį! Trakai Castle is an island castle located in Lithuania on a small island in Lake Galve. The castle was built in three main phases. Construction began in the 14th century and was one of the main centers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as it was built on a strategic island. Trakai suffered major damage during an attack on both sides of the castle led by the Teutonic Knights in 1377. The second phase of construction began in 1409 and is when much of the modern castle was built. Two wings were added, as well as the six story keep (a fortified tower). The keep served as a chapel and living quarters and had gates to separate it from the rest of Trakai. During this phase the principal construction material was red Gothic bricks. The foundation is made up of stone blocks. The third phase took place in the early 15th century and was primarily the expanding of the forecastle. The walls here were strengthened to a thickness of 8.2 feet. Three major defensive towers were constructed on the corners with one being used as a prison. A gatehouse, and other small buildings like stables and a kitchen was built. The water levels of Lake Galve were over ten feet higher than they are today, so designers added a moat between the keep and the forecastle just wide enough for a canoe. Unfortunately the castle soon lost importance after the Battle of Grunwald and was eventually turned into a prison. During wars in the 17th century, the castle was damaged and never repaired. During WWI, Germans brought in specialists that made several repair attempts. After WWII, a major reconstruction project took place and was finished by 1961. Dėkojame, kad lankotės! |
