| Добро пожаловать на Ивангородскую крепость! Ivangorod Fortress is a medieval Russian castle built by Ivan III in 1492 on the Narva River in north-west Russia. On the other side of the river is the Estonian city of Narva with their own Narva Hermann Castle. The fortress was built to give the Russian Empire access to the sea and defend the town and river from the knights of the Teutonic Order. For almost ten years, the land around the castle was almost a constant fight. Both the castle and the land around it was always changing hands. Finally after the collapse of the German Tuetonic Order in Estonia, The Treaty of Teusina (1595) returned Ivangorod to the Russians. In 1612 the Swedish came into rule and took over the castle which was bravely defended by a small number of soldiers and expanded upon it. After the 18th century the military role of the fortress quickly declined due to technological advances. In the 19th and early 20th century the fortress was repaired after being neglected for over a century. The fort was captured by Germans in WWI. The National Socialists of Germany captured the castle in WWII and turned it into a POW camp. During the German retreat the fortress was deliberately damaged. The Ivangorod and the town stayed with Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union and today the castle stands as an important piece of history to Russia. The museum that is in the castle today has many archaeological finds from the area as well as paintings and other local artifacts. Спасибо за посещение! |
